Any full-time student of the University may apply for a usa.edu email account at no charge.  See Enrollment Services at the front desk to apply.  For San Diego campus, please see the Receptionist in Building A.

St. Augustine

Laptops must have 802.11b or 802.11g to access wireless on campus.  Each personal computer must be installed with an up-to-date anti-virus program to protect your computer and we strongly recommend you have your firewall turned on and keep your operating system (Windows) regularly updated.  The SSID for both campuses is "student" and does NOT require a password.  Both buildings on the St. Augustine campus are covered.

For more details click on Campus-Based Wireless Access.

San Diego

San Diego campus student network (SSID) is "Student" and no password is required.

USAHS' computers have been installed with 2003 Microsoft Office Suite, which includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Also installed is graphic-editing software, Paint and IrfanView.  Norton's AntiVirus is also on the computers so files are protected.  See the FAQs portlet for more on this and links to tutorials.

IMPORTANT
USAHS' computers are provided for you to assist you with your studies.  Installing instant messaging programs and games is not considered acceptable use of the University's property (see Student Handbook).  Absolutely no software installation is permitted.

To write files to a DVD-Ror CD-R, click on the "My Computer" icon for access to the DVD/CD Drive and the Network Drive (U).  All computers in the Lab can access these same drives.

IMPORTANT
These computers also support USB Flash-Drives.  These portable devices can hold a lot of data, are inexpensive, and rugged.  You can buy them locally or over the Internet from various dealers.   Either Information Technology Specialist can help you if you are not sure what to purchase.  Make sure you save your file on the local desktop before doing any modules.  Save your file one last time before exiting, then save it to your USB Flash Drive.

USB Flash Drives
All University computers have USB ports.  Just plug in the drive, open a folder, and save the files.

Purchase a blank CD-R
Larger files can be written to a CD-R; they can accommodate up to 700 MB of data.  If students don not have their own USB Flash Drive, they can purchase blank CD-R's from the Librarian for $0.50 each (St. Augustine only).  The FAQs in the Library Portal cover this topic.  CD-R's are used because they are compatible with all the audio-visual carts used by the University.  DVD-R's are also compatible.  CD-RW disks may NOT be compatible.  If you are bringin your own CD for a presentation, use a CD-R, NOT a CD-RW.  The same is true for DVD media.  DVD-RW media is NOT compatible with our computers and A/V carts.

Save documents to the Hard Drive
This is NOT the best idea.  Do NOT save your documents to the local hard drive or desktop, as the Computer Lab computers are wiped every time the computer restarts.Computer Lab computers are wiped every few weeks, so data saved might be there one day and gone the next.  Better to save files to the Network (U) Drive.

IMPORTANT
All the Computer Lab computers share access to this drive, so everyone can view private documents.

Do not use CD-RWs, they may not be compatible.

Never trust a CD-R or a USB Flash Drive with the sole existing document.  Always back-up data to a second location.

All 12 computers in the Lab are connected to the 2 printers located at the front of the room, and the five computers in the Academic Building can not print.

Printing
Highlight the job on the print console and click on the "Print" button.  The job is identified by the computer ID which is displayed in the lower-right corner of the computer's monitor.  Insert the copy card in the card reader to finish authorization and print the job.  Authorize the print job at $0.10/page.  To print several jobs at one time, just highlight several jobs first.

San Diego

All 17 computers are connected to 1 printer.

Printing
When printing, first enter a username to identify your job; your print job will go directly to the printing workstation close to the printer.  From there you will have to highlight your print job and insert your copy card in the card reader to be able to print.  Cards are available for purchase from the Library Assistant.
