The Dr. Paul Mackarey Award

in Health Care Journalism

Dr. Mackarey is an alumnus of the University of St. Augustine DHSc program. He has established himself as a successful practitioner, educator and health care journalist, in great part due to his graduate degree from USA. Now, he wants to give something back to the University in the form of a monetary award to be used for graduate school expenses such as tuition, books, materials, etc.

Interested students must develop and write an article on a health care topic. All submissions will be considered by Dr. Mackarey and the one column judged most suitable for publication each term will be awarded $500.00 and will be published in his weekly column, "Health & Exercise Forum by Dr. Paul Mackarey" in The Scranton Times-Tribune Scranton, PA . This award is open to all students in entry-level programs as well as post-professional programs and in any location (campus based students or Distance Education students). Mackarey, Column Archives. Please note: Columns not receiving a first place award, yet still deemed valuable, may be considered for publication with the authors permission.

Other criteria:  
*written at 10th grade level (speak as if explaining a health care topic to your  grandmother);

*650 to 950 words but can be presented as a two or three column series if necessary;

*health care relevant, especially as it relates to physical/occupational therapy for example: "Improve Survival From Breast Cancer" in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in September, my column for the first Monday in September discussed the studies that show that exercise 3-5 days per week for 20 to 30 minutes significantly improves survival rates of women with breast cancer.

The University of St Augustine for Health Sciences’ (USA) eligibility to participate in Federal Student Aid does not extend to all degree programs.  At this time, the DHSc, EdD and OPA programs are not Federal Student Aid eligible programs.

Federal regulations require programs to be authorized and in existence for two consecutive years before Federal Student Aid will be available.  The the DHSc, EdD and OPA programs were not eligible at the time of application and will not be considered for submission of approval until such time and/or after the provisional approval period from the Department of Education, whichever is the later

Student seeking financial assistance for these programs are eligible for the Smart Option program and/or the Tuition-Payment plans available through the Financial Aid office.  Students are encouraged to visit the University’s website or contact the Financial Aid Office to learn more information.
