Learning Experience

Please share/ discuss something you learned from this fieldwork experience you feel will impact your practice as occupational therapist in the future. 

I learned how the approach to pediatric patients can differ in the schools versus in the clinic and the differences in the documentation process. I learned how the IEP process works and participate in the patients IEP’s that I evaluated. It is very important to stay organized when working in the school system, because you are constantly moving from school to school and transport your paper work and supplies with you. I also learned how crucial time management was working in the school system, especially trying to fit in a caseload of 74 patients per week.

In the clinic I learned how to treat a variety of diagnoses, and how to adjust and/or change patient’s interventions. I learned how to use G codes for Medicare, and how to document differently for Medicare versus different workman comp insurances. Everything I learned will impact my practice as an OT in a positive way.
