Description

This course is an advanced assessment and treatment course for the adult neurologic client. This course is designed to integrate neurologic principles learned in previous courses as well as instruction in advanced assessment and treatment techniques for the neurologically impaired client. Emphasis will be on lab experiences consisting of patient or video demonstration and case studies. Students will perform assessments with emphasis on movement and task analysis, prioritizing patient problems, developing treatments/ plans of care (including goal setting, discharge planning and referrals), and practice techniques for varied neurologic clients of any age. Specific principles and applications of strength training, constraint induced movement therapy, body weight supported treadmill training, mental imagery, orthotics, wheelchair prescription and serial casting will be addressed. Teaching Methods

The class format is a combination of online and face to face lecture and face to face lab for a total of 4 hours/week. Lecture material will supplement the lab sessions. Lab sessions will allow the students to practice evaluation and treatment techniques on lab partners or actual patients when available. Emphasis will be placed on interaction between students and their sharing of treatment ideas and plans.   Clinical Integrated Experience will occur outside of the classroom to enahnace the learner’s experience with this advanced content. Class presentations of evidence based literature as well as participation in journal club discussions will take place to demonstrate skill in consuming the evidence.

This class will emphasize problem solving and creativity.   Students are expected to be self-directed, critical thinkers, and responsible for utilizing all class time appropriately. Opportunities are available for practicing treatment techniques during class time. Students are expected to take advantage of this time. This class is designed to build on previous skills. Students will be expected to review areas they feel deficient outside of class time.
