The Fairfax County School System OT/PT department emphasizes evidence based practice and makes it easy for the OT and PT staff here to learn and share about new research.  There are quarterly meetings about exploring the evidence and developing standards of practice in different interest areas that the therapists here can sign up for.  I attended the "mealtimes" group last week and learned about the role of OTs in this occupation in this schools system.  The OTs in this group are developing a form for all therapists to use to evaluate children in mealtimes that is based on the latest research.
I am also researching the effectiveness of various handwriting interventions, and sensory integration for children with ASD as a project for FCPS.

This is one of the articles I have reviewed as a part of my project:

Donica, D.K. Lust, C.A. (2011.) Effectivness of a Handwriting Readiness Program in Head Start: A Two-Group Controlled Trial.  The American Journal of Occupational Therapy. 65(5.) 560-568

Hi Sarah - thanks for the post. You used a great article to support OT intervention :).  One of the things to remember is that sometimes standards of practice are NOT based on research. They tend to be based on what experts say - which may or may not have evidence. Only quantitative experimental designs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses truly provide the evidence behind what we do.
