Week 10 Bulletin Board Original post: Thu 11/14/2013 at 11:22 PM

Discuss how evidence based practice is used to support client interventions in this setting.

I am currently in the acute setting where evidence based practice is used often to support various interventions based on the patient's diagnosis. Most often the therapists (physical and occupational) are needing to explain to the nurses, personal care attendants, and sometimes doctors on the importance of getting the patient up and participating in normal daily activities. The therapists best weapon is evidence-based practice to show the staff that getting patients up and moving can help progress them. I have often seen coworkers looking up articles, reading journals during their lunch or a break to help support how and why they will be treating a certain diagnosis.

Hi Beth - thanks for the post. You are so correct on using evidence to support use of early interventions for clients in ICUs. I think the only caution I would give is to make sure that you (and others that are looking for evidence) are truly finding experimental designs, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses to read/review. Based on the title of your article you provided, it looks like a description of other research (maybe, at best) and does not provide new evidence or supporting evidence on its own.
