Week 10 Original post: Thu 11/14/2013 at 11:37 PM
At Occuplay, Inc a private pediatric OT clinic my supervisor is trained and certified for Brain Gym. This is an intervention model that incorporates of goal setting for individuals, bilateral integration and laterality of brain. I have seen first hand how the se of Brain Gym in school age children has helped improve grades and decrease test anxiety by practicing set principles in everyday life. Brain gym can also be used an educational model, therefore there is carryover into the child's everyday life from OT to school. The article I found to support this evidence based practice found that by using brain gym practices children improved in there reduction of processing speed time associated with lateral movements due to brief periods of brain intervention. This program also helps children make and action plan about how to accomplish set goals. This is simply one evidence based intervention model that we use of a daily basis. Other intervention include NDT and sensory integration practices.

Hi Amanda - I'm glad you have had a good experience in seeing the use of the Brain Gym and how it can change what a child does. However, there isn't a whole lot of research into it, especially when it looks at some of the functional implications for the skills that it teaches. You choose a good article to back up its use though :). Thanks!
