In the practice of hand therapy, every treatment intervention is based on evidence based research. All tendons protocols, shoulder treatments, and elbow treatments all follow strict guidelines that have been tested and re-tested. Modalities, on the other hand, only MHP, cryotherapy, and fluidotherapy are supported by research. Ultrasound and iontophoresis still do not have enough research behind them. Ultrasound is very inconsistent and insurance does not cover iontophoresis because it is not proven to have a positive effect the majority of the time. Also, if there are diagnoses that present in the clinic that I am not familiar with, I am to do some research on them, prepare a short write up/ summary, and bring the articles in for the clinic to review and keep on file for future reference.

Hi Taylor - Thanks for the post. I think hand therapy IS an area that is most apt to have good evidence behind some protocols. However, there can always be more done! As you point out, the use of PAMs to support function is also lacking, especially for OT!

However, I need one research article to back up something that you have done this term before this is complete.
Here is Taylor's article:
Chesney, A., Chauhan, A., Kattan, A., Farrokhyar, F., & Thoma, A. (2011). Systematic review of flexor tendon rehabilitation protocols in zone ii of the hand. Plastic Reconstruction Surgery127(4), 1583-1592.
 Conplete!
