As I expected, this fieldwork experience at Teton Hand Therapy validated my thoughts of pursuing hand therapy as a practice niche in our profession. I knew I had an “orthopedic” mindset, since I started in the DPT program, however, I developed a strong interest in neuro as well during these last two years of academics. One of the things I like about hand therapy is that I get to work with all populations – neuro, peds, adult, geriatric, and potentially even mental health clients. So, even though it is orthopedic-focused, the potential to be exposed to a variety of populations appeals to me. In addition, including functional outcomes in all goals is still a critical aspect of hand therapy, which I felt was lacking on the DPT “ortho” side. To me, that is the most important part of what we do – facilitate a return to daily function for each of our patients/clients, not just a return of physiologic or anatomic function.
