Week 11 BB Original post: Wed 11/25/2015 at 11:52 AM

There are so many things that I have learned from this fieldwork rotation that I will be able to take with me when I begin my career as an occupational therapist. Not only did I learn so much about documentation, insurances, and therapeutic use of self, I also familiarized myself with many different interventions that I did not know about or feel comfortable with performing prior to this. I now feel very confident treating neuro patients of all different functional levels from the beginning evaluation to the discharge. I am able to accurately select different assessments and make treatment goals according to their needs and own personal goals. I gained so much experience using different modalities such as e-stim and Bioness and used different interventions such as retrograde mobilizations, UE facilitation using aircasts and mirrors, etc. I have also learned how to get creative with the tools I am provided with and how to grade them appropriately. Who knew things as simple as a pegboard or a tennis ball could be used for so many things!

Natalie,

I think of all the things you listed I am most excited about the Therapeutic Use of Self. This is one skill that will really serve you well throughout your career and practice.  Other strategies can be learned, but Therapeutic Use of Self is something that each of you need to really find and refine within ourselves.  It is part of our journey as therapists. Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks. Count down 5 more days!
