Week 11 Original post: Fri 8/1/2014 at 11:14 AM

During this fieldwork rotation I learned a lot about splinting and I feel it will impact my future as an occupational therapist. This rotation gave me weekly, if not daily, opportunities to create custom orthoses or provide prefabricated orthoses for my clients. These opportunities have allowed me to gain skill in an area of occupational therapy that can be very specialized and to become more creative in my splinting ideas. I think this is important because I have learned to think more out of the box when coming up with ways to meet my client’s needs. This is a skill that is not only important for splinting, but for all areas of occupational therapy. I believe my critical thinking skills have improved immensely during this last rotation and that I will be able to carry these skills into any setting that I find myself working in. My goal setting is outpatient hand therapy, so the knowledge and skills I learned at the Mayo Clinic will most definitely have a positive impact in my career as an occupational therapist.
