Unit 8 Original post: Tue 11/4/2014 at 8:05 AM

I am currently working with rehab children at Children's Hospital in New Orleans.  The majority of our treatment sessions are preparatory activities due to the children's injuries or diseases and because many of them come to us still very early on in their recovery.  We always make sure to have the treatment session be client centered and prepare the client to return to their occupations when they return home.

Our limitation right now is that we are seeing several children who have very low functional abilities and we are just trying to work on the developmental basics such as head and trunk control.  We also have children who are still in casts and in the acute healing stages of their injuries.  We have had a few high functioning patients and we were able to work on navigating the kitchen and practicing safety in the kitchen for the two patients who wanted to return to cooking their favorite meals when they got home.  Because we are working with children, their occupations are often school and play which is age appropriate for most of the patients we see.  For our older kids, we encourage the parents to let the children start helping more in the kitchen with cooking or cleaning and other chores such as laundry to continue working on tasks such as standing endurance.

For the Demographics of Treatment Sessions specify the Percent for each of the following statements:

Considering an eight hour day, what percentage of your interventions would you describe as:

Occupation-based activities i.e., play, shopping, ADL, IADL, work, school activities, etc. (within client’s own context with his or her goals) ___10____%

Purposeful activities (therapeutic context leading to occupation) __20______%

Preparatory methods i.e., sensory, PAMs, splinting, exercise, etc. (preparation for occupation-based activity) _____70___%

Total (Should equal 100%)
