Where does occupational therapy fit in the organizational chart for your facility?

Occupational therapy is one of the special services provided in the school district.  We work alongside the school counselor, school psychologist, special education teachers, regular education teachers, physical education teachers, speech therapist, physical therapists, resource teachers, aides, and teaching assistants.  We rotate through three elementary schools in the New Hartford Central School System.  One of the schools has a Developmental Program (DP), where many children who are identified on the autism spectrum attend class.  We primarily work in that building.

1.  Co-instruct a social sensory group with the school counselor.

2.  Independently administer kindergarten screening assessments.

3.  Manage a caseload of at least 10 students independently.

I have been sitting in on the various types of groups run by the occupational therapist.  Two of these groups are the social sensory group and the OT/ST group.  I have been slowly integrated into the groups and led a portion of an activity with a group.  Slowly, I will help more and then be able to run a group with the counselor.  There are general lesson plans already established for this program.  Taking time to study the lesson binder will help me prepare to run one of these groups.
