Over the course of this fieldwork experience, I have learned a great deal about Autism Spectrum Disorder and the treatment of sensory processing disorders.  For each of our clients in the school and the home-based settings who have issues related to sensory processing, it has been my job to research and come up with a sensory diet that is individualized for the client based on his/her needs.  This is something that was new to me, so I learned how to integrate everyday activities and household items into the child's daily routine in order to attempt to calm them down or stimulate their senses, whichever the case called for.  This will definitely help me in my future career as a pediatric OT because sensory processing disorders are so common in this population and usually it is necessary for children to take breaks throughout their day in order to regain focus and attention to functional tasks that we ask of them during treatment sessions and school.
