1) Please discuss how you incorporate occupation-based interventions in this setting.

In the outpatient pediatric clinic, we use play and school-work on a regular basis with a great number of our patients, depending on the goals and abilities of the children.

2) Describe two issues that limit your ability to use occupation-based interventions and discuss strategies that could be used to minimize these barriers.

Limiting occupation based interventions is:

a. Level of the client: client may use appropriate play skills but isn’t ready to complete handwriting or other school-work activities.

b. Goals of the client: Some patients are in OT specifically for the Interactive Metronome protocol and we cannot stray from the protocol by using other treatment methods.

I think that the Interactive Metronome protocol is very helpful and produces great results for our patients, however, I do think that incorporating other treatment activities utilizing play or handwriting would maximize the benefit for the program.

3) For the Demographics of Treatment Sessions specify the Percent and Comments for each of the following statements:

Considering an eight hour day, what percentage of your interventions would you describe as:

Occupation-based activities i.e., play, shopping, ADL, IADL, work, school activities, etc. (within client’s own context with his or her goals) 25% (Comments: play and school-based work)

Purposeful activities (therapeutic context leading to occupation) 60 % (Comments: Interactive metronome and Visual Processing Training using accommodative flipper glasses)

Preparatory methods i.e., sensory, PAMs, splinting, exercise, etc. (preparation for occupation-based activity) 15% (Comments: we do see an orthopedic client or adult often.)

Total (Should equal 100%)
